Went to The Turkish Restaurant for dinner last night. Ordered my usual: Coban Kavurma. What is Coban Kavurma? It is hunks of lamb mixed with peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. On the side comes kous kous, rice, shredded lettuce, carrots, and onions. What the waitress brought out was not the usual platter, but rather just the stew. I tried to tell the waitress that 1/2 the plate was missing but the girl spoke very little English. "This Coban Karuma!" she kept repeating. "You been here before?" "You sure same restaurant?" I stayed calm and decided to let it slide. The food was still good, just much less than normal. As I sat there I couldn't help but think about Germany. My German is far better than the Turkish waitress's English. I tried hard to understand her and I tried to speak as simply as possible so she could understand me. Yet, when I was in Germany, the Germans ---collectively-- went out of their way to speak quickly, mumble, and use words that were obviously outside of my language level. I am not talking about a waitress at an Imbiss or a clerk at a grocery store-- I mean EVERYONE, especially people I considered friends. I mentioned this to my father and he brought up a point I hadn't realized. He said that where we live is a bit unusual in it's progressiveness. If were to take America as a whole, especially the small towns, I would find that many people would act in the way the Germans did to me.
